Good Afternoon CFI Families, This week’s blog will be a recap of our week and some more details about our author study project. This week we expanded our plant unit to include measuring and documenting the growth in our own carrot, green bean, and marigold plants and are shifting to look more at rocks and soils. We celebrated our plant unit with the fun strawberry picking day. Thank you to the many chaperones who accompanied us. The weather was perfect and the kids had a great time picking. Here they are below.

This week we started looking at the soil samples you brought in from spring break and the ways we could classify them. We listed the ways we could sort them, from weight, to color and texture. We will start doing this next week as we explore both the soil samples and rocks we find in our own environment. Today we mapped out where our soil samples came from and were able to look at elements of maps such as icons and keys. We also had to figure out how to show places as far away as Canada and as close up as down the street. We looked at maps depicting the entire North America and our own Columbia neighborhood. In writing and reading we have been working on analyzing author’s craft and exploring the authors we picked for our expert projects. Please remember this is separate than what you are doing at home but will be presented together. We talked about how authors use alliteration, onomatopoeia, repeating text, rhyming and so much more across their literary works. We’ve also looked at illustrations as many authors tell portions of their story through these captivating images. Please remember that the biographical portion is to be researched and displayed at home. We will not be doing this in class. I have had two parents send their child’s notes in. I will be sending them home today so that they can be put on a poster or in a book. The due date for bringing in the display is May 12th. That’s all for now but thanks for reading and check out the upcoming dates below. Upcoming Dates: May 7th- CFI Family Day at the Fireflies game May 12th- Expert Projects Due and School Dance May 26th- Sandhills Library Trip and Splash Day
