Good Afternoon CFI Families!

Here is our week recap. We have spent a good portion of our week sharing expert projects and they were so well prepared so thank you so much for all your help with these! We have been sharing them each day and if you have not received your child’s video please be assured it is on the way. Today we closed out the week sharing with the school in a share fair. The pictures in this blog are of each child with their presentation. There are also pictures of them showing their projects. They were great experts and taught things ranging from their facts to how to play a violin with confidence. We learned about inventions such as the ceiling fan, refrigerator, and rocking chair and learned along the way about research and thinking like historians. Almost all of the expert projects went home today but we will continue exploring them in math as we make a timeline of when each was invented.

This week we all celebrated International End Racism Day as a school. Dr. Mueller read the book Skin Again to the school in our Monday morning gathering and each class then held discussions about it. Each class made a poster to represent the points that stood out to them and then shared them in a gathering Tuesday afternoon. Our discussion centered around the book’s theme of who you are on the inside and not judging people by first impressions or looks (be that the color of their skin or the outfits they like to wear). The favorite line from the book was “my skin is just a covering if you want to know my story you need to come inside.” For our poster we mixed paints to match each person’s skin tone and made the outline of our hands. Each child then went back and drew things that make them uniquely them on the inside. Many drew family, things they like, and favorite activities. Some of my favorite quotes from our conversation were “your skin is just a part of your story but so is your family and the things you like,” “the real you is on the inside,” and “skin color shouldn’t matter.”I loved hearing them react to this wonderful book and connect it to their own lives. Together we presented these ideas along with our poster to the school that afternoon. It was interesting to see how each class reacted and we are excited to continue these types of school engagements in the future.

This next week we will be going to the Richland Children’s Hospital so please remember your lunch selection and let me know if you are willing to be a chaperone.
