Good Afternoon CFI Families,
I have been excited to see many of you over the past few days for student led conferences. The kids were busy preparing for them this week. They brainstormed ideas for each content area and picked things like strategies they use, facts from recent areas of study, and how they help their community. I know it is just a brief glimpse into their learning, but I hope along with gathering last week it has helped you see their growth so far this year. I know I was proud of their initiative when selecting what they wanted to talk about in gathering and in researching topics we had not even explored together like about astronauts. They were much more confident and excited this time about sharing their learning with the school. They have truly grown so much since their last gathering.
This coming week we will be exploring the moon during the day since the moon rise time is now past midnight and the moon is still out when we arrive at school. There have been many great entries that have fueled our continued interest in the moon. This morning we were able to go out together and sketch it looking at craters and the pattern of how it has changed over time. Even if you still have pages empty in your moon log, you no longer need to go out and observe the moon since it is so late. This being said, I do encourage you look up when you leave the house as it is always fun to do this together.
In math, we are moving into looking at reading a clock. We discussed the difference between an analog and digital clock, AM and PM, and used time in context when graphing the moon rise times for the week. We will continue this study next week as we look at how to read a clock.
On Tuesday, we celebrated Valentine’s day, or Friendship day here at CFI with cards, candy, and stories. We read Boy+Bot and Dr. Mueller came as a guest reader to read One Giant Hug. Both of these are sweet stories about caring for others and allowed us to celebrate friendship in our classroom.
On the 28th we have our next field trip. We will arrive at the museum at 9:00. If you are interested in chaperoning please email me. The fee for chaperones is $8 and needs to be paid when we arrive at the museum. We will enjoy a planetarium show, lunch at 12:00, and class in the observatory at 1:00. We will return to school by 2:15. Our lunch will be in the cafeteria at the museum with either a bagged lunch brought from home or a bagged lunch from our school cafeteria. The remainder of our time will be spent exploring the museum in small groups. There is a great telescope room and many other amazing things to see. We hope you can join us!
That’s it for now but here are the upcoming dates:
